Update Latest Release in QuickBooks Desktop

There are two ways on how to download and install updates to your QuickBooks Desktop.

You can use either:

  • Manual Updates

  • Automatic Updates

Important: Please do not confuse updating to a new release with upgrading to a new version (example: from QuickBooks Desktop 2017 to QuickBooks Desktop 2018).

Download and install QuickBooks release updates

Updating to a new release sometimes needs to make minor changes in the database. These changes will not make the data file incompatible with earlier releases.

Manual update

Solution I: Download From the Internet

  • Go to the Update to the Latest Release web page.

  • Make sure your product is selected. If not, click the Change link and select your QuickBooks product.

  • Click Update.

  • Select to Save the update file to your desktop.

  • When the download completes, double click to install file. You may need to restart Windows after the installation is complete.

  • You can install manual updates across your network either by:

  1. Accessing the install file on your computer from another computer.

  2. Copying the install file to a flash drive and then to the desktop of another computer.

Solution II: Get in QuickBooks Desktop

  1. From the File menu, click Close Company/Logoff.

  2. Note: If you open multiple company files in QuickBooks Desktop, you have to do this step for every company that are open.

  3. Click File > Exit.

  4. Right-click the QuickBooks Desktop icon on your desktop.

  5. Click Run as administrator.

  6. Make sure you are in the No Company Open screen.

  7. From Help menu, choose Update QuickBooks.

  8. Click Options.

  9. Select the Mark All button then click Save.

  10. Click Update Now.

  11. Click Reset Update then click the Get Updates button.

  12. When the Update Complete message appears, close QuickBooks Desktop.

  13. Open QuickBooks Desktop. If you get the message to install update, click Yes.

  14. When the installation is complete, restart your computer.

Automatic update

  1. From the QuickBooks Help menu, click Update QuickBooks.

  2. In the Update QuickBooks window, go to the Update Now tab.

  3. Ignore the table, you do not need to change anything there.

  4. (Optional) Put a check mark in the box labeled Reset Update to erase all previous update downloads.

  5. Note: This may increase the amount of time needed for the update.

  6. Click Get Updates.

  7. The current release will download and you will need to restart QuickBooks to install the update.

  8. When restarting QuickBooks, accept the option to install the new release.
